Inspired by sci-fi anime and movies like COWBOY BEBOP and BLADE RUNNER, SPACE RYDER is a sci-fi action adventure short film that follows Ryder, a bounty hunter in the future who chases wanted creatures from planet to planet.

Our team had access to a Virtual Production stage with a 180 degree LED volume for exactly 5 days. We shot the entire film in that time.

SPACE RYDER was commissioned by disguise to showcase the art of the possible in VP and act as a real-time learning platform.

OVER 15 VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS
The short was filmed in 5 days on 1 VP stage. With minimal prep time, and having to create virtual scenes in real-time with Unreal Engine 5 on set during the shoot, we pushed LED volume and ICVFX to the limit.

The film was commissioned and powered by disguise to showcase the limitless possibilities of VP, and act as a real-time learning platform to accelerate the adoption of new VP technology in the film industry. With disguise’s support and technical expertise, we were able to create the first indie VP short film of its kind.
FROM HOLLYWOOD TO INDIE VIRTUAL PRODUCTION
Our team consists of Hollywood professionals with decades of experience in traditional TV and film. With only 5 days to shoot and minimal prep time, we had to go back to our independent filmmaking roots and apply the spirit of guerilla filmmaking to virtual production.
THE PROCESS
We created this short in order to enhance our understanding of virtual production and get a better sense of the VP pipeline/workflow. We learned a lot through hands-on experience and are excited to share our process. More ‘making of’ videos coming soon.
THE TEAM
We had an incredible crew with decades of experience working on traditional Hollywood TV and film sets. We gathered the best and brightest, people who truly saw this as a passion project and were willing to go above and beyond to create something special.
